Finally, the hue is the actual colour, like blue and red. The measure of colour intensity runs from the centre outward and is known as chroma, and likewise the most saturated colours will be called the most chromatic. For instance, darker colours are said to be dark in “value”. In Munsell’s system, the scale of dark to light is measured vertically and known as value. This was a means of organising and describing colours that was first published by American art professor Albert Munsell in 1905. In this tutorial, I will be using terminology based on the Munsell Colour System. Ideally the photo should be as near to the actual size of your painting as possible. When you have chosen your photograph, you can print it out or have it open on your laptop. A better reference photo will display a clear shadow area, details will be clearly visible and the skin colour will be more true to life. Overexposed photos barely register the colour of a person’s skin, making it appear almost completely white. If you compare an overexposed image with a more accurately taken photo, you can see the differences. Thirdly, it shouldn’t be either under- or overexposed. When choosing your photograph, it’s important to choose one that has three main qualities. This will involve explaining what to look for when choosing a reference photograph, how to go about painting that photo, and how to make adjustments. In this article, I will talk you through a more advanced way of painting a portrait from a photograph. If done right, working from photographs can be a really good way to practice your drawing and painting skills. A great alternative for honing your skills is, of course, learning how to paint from photographs. But not all of us will have the luxury of access to a life model or local drawing class. Painting from life has always been the classic and most beneficial way to learn how to paint.
